Chapter Philanthropy
In August of 2021, Kappa Kappa Gamma was proud to nationally announce that every chapter will embark on a new philanthropic purpose to raise mental health awareness. The Theta Beta of Kappa Kappa Gamma chapter at Illinois State University has since partnered with Active Minds and Project Oz to help promote the importance of well-being and mental health. As a chapter we are proud to be able to support a cause that not only effects members of the ISU Panhellenic community, but that effects are society nationwide.
Throughout the past few years, our chapter has held a variety of events to fundraise for our philanthropic partners, and is continuously pursuing unique new ways to raise funds and promote awareness. We have hosted Chipotle fundraisers, charity basketball games, dunk tank fundraisers, donut and cookie sales, and many more. We are always looking to expand our range of fundraisers and create fun events for all the community to attend. Through our events we not only try to raise funds, but also promote awareness for the importance of ending the stigma around mental health, which we do so by passing out ribbons, creating informational flyers, and including educational guest speakers.
Annually, we hold our Kappa Krush event, in which we partner with ISU fraternities/RSOs to compete and raise money for Active Minds, Project Oz, and the Kappa Kappa Gamma Foundation. Our Kappa Krush event is our biggest fundraiser of the year, involving several members of the Panhellenic community and spanning from mid-January until mid-February. Participants compete to be awarded the title of Kappa Krush of the year, which they win by raising the most funds.
Besides our own fundraisers, we also participate in several community service events. Our annual events include the Out of the Darkness Walk, sponsored by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, and the Best Buddies Friendship Walk, sponsored by Best Buddies International. Both of these events spread awareness for inclusivity, mental health, and work to bring the community together. Kappa Kappa Gamma is proud to be able to support these foundations and volunteer our time together as a chapter. Not only are we able to bring awareness to these important causes, but they also allow us to spend time together with our sisterhood and form stronger bonds with our sisters.
As time goes on, the Theta Beta chapter of Kappa Kappa Gamma is beyond proud to continue raising awareness for mental health and well-being, as we work to create a world where there is no stigma around openly talking about these issues. Thus far, we have not only seen a positive change in the way our school community approaches mental health conversations, but we have also seen an increase in mental health resources. We look forward to continue seeing these improvements, as well as raising money for mental health research, awareness, and resources.
